Thanks to the ADA - Stephanie's Story

  • July 2, 2020

Stephanie was a patient at a higher risk for breast cancer. She made an appointment at a breast imaging center that claimed to have highly advanced specialized equipment. On the day of her appointment though, the staff at the imaging center informed her they would not lift her onto the table for the diagnostic procedure.

Stephanie, who uses a wheelchair for mobility, is paralyzed and unable to get onto the table independently. Stephanie said the experience made her feel “like a person who had no value as a human being.”

The ADA requires health care providers to provide individuals with disabilities equal access to their services and facilities. Thanks to the ADA and Stephanie's powerful self advocacy, she was eventually able to gain access to medical equipment and her health care. Now she and other people with disabilities will be able to access the medical care the diserve.
