Thanks to the ADA – George’s story

July 2, 2020

It was important to George that he get to have regular visits with his family. Spending time with his family makes him feel less lonely.

George has Multiple Sclerosis and is currently in a correctional facility. He uses a wheelchair for mobility and the visiting room was not accessible for his wheelchair. George could not play card or board games with his family when they came to visit, because the table would not fit his wheelchair. He felt sad that he couldn’t spend time in the visitation room like the other residents.

The ADA states that State prisons must provide people with disabilities equal access to programs and services. DRT worked with the prison, and it obtained a wheelchair accessible table in the visitation area for inmates and visitors to use. Now, thanks to the ADA, George is able to visit with family and friends and lives a happier, less isolated life.
