How We Help
As the Protection & Advocacy (P&A) in Tennessee, DRT is granted “reasonable unaccompanied access” by the federal government to access both state and privately-owned facilities that provide services, care, housing, and treatment to Tennesseans living with disabilities and/or mental illness.
These places include schools, group homes, adult care homes, residential treatment facilities, day programs, jails and prisons, nursing homes, and psychiatric hospitals.
Our staff monitors these services and facilities to ensure that the people they serve are safe, healthy, and getting what they need. We talk with residents directly to uncover any issues and we work with facility staff to address any concerns.
We teach self-advocacy to residents and provide resources, guidance, and training to facility workers. Working together, we make sure that the welfare of Tennesseans with disabilities and/or mental illness is the priority for all.
